Area Real Estate Market is HOT Now
During the last week of June, in the Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte and North Port residential markets, there were 138 new listings, 216 new contracts written, and 205 homes Sold/Closed transactions.
The City wins an American Public Works Association Projects of the Year Award
Each year, APWA presents these awards to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects, recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the contractor, the consultant, and their cooperative achievements. The City of Punta Gorda won the category of Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair, $25 million-$75 million for the Seawall Recover Project after Hurricane Irma. Kudos!
Charlotte County’s economic news

“We’re looking at a rebound sooner rather than later”
Dave Gammon, Director of Charlotte County Economic Development states, “Many of our residents have certainly experienced their share of tough times, but in comparison to other communities, Charlotte County is well positioned for a strong recovery.” Government funding, County demographics help. Crucially, “it’s also due to the strategic way the County has planned for economic growth and needed infrastructure.”
Allegiant Air still flying high
While federal rules allowed airlines to reduce routes up to 90%, Allegiant maintained 70% of its routes, cancelling only 18%. And with $174 million in CARES funding, along with substantial tax credits, the airline, like the County, is well-positioned to weather the pandemic’s effects, especially given the strength that leisure travel has shown.
Cheney Brothers continues expansion
Despite COVID-19 impacts, Cheney Brothers is continuing the $8.6 million 80,000-sq.-ft. expansion of its food service distribution operation, and creating innovations like new packaging to accommodate a higher level of restaurant takeout business.
Punta Gorda Airport continues its $6-million renovation
Renovation and relocation of the general aviation area continues with the help of an additional $24-million in CARES funding. The current project will free up space for development of commercial aviation, helping to kick start growth in avionics and aerospace, with flight school opportunities as well.

Punta Gorda (MSA) Named Top Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
Forbes reported that an analysis from think tank, Heartland Forward, identified 20 top entrepreneurial ecosystems across America, based on the share of employment by small firms, and the number of college-educated employees in those firms. Punta Gorda (MSA) ranked #7! It’s thanks to YOU, our hardworking and innovative business community, that we achieved this prestigious recognition!
Top Airline Quality Rating
Allegiant Airline came 1st place in the 2020 30th Annual Airline Quality Rating study that ranks U.S airlines by based on mishandled baggage, consumer complaints, on-time performance and involuntary denied-boardings. It’s the most comprehensive study of performance & quality of large airlines in the U.S. View more here.
How has Education Been Working in Charlotte County?
6,000 Chromebooks distributed, 1,000 hot-spots donated to families in need, over 95% of our students are logging in every day to complete their school work! In person graduation ceremonies tentatively planned for the week of July 14. School opening in the Fall to be announced by the Governor’s office. KUDOS to our school district leadership, teachers, staff, families and students who have come together to make student success a priority this Spring. Happy Summer!
Punta Gorda Symphony Summer Band Camp
Band Camp will be held virtually this summer! Adapting to the current social climate, Punta Gorda Symphony and Hope Academy of Music will hold its annual band camp July 13-July 31 – but with virtual classes. Maestro Raffaele Ponti is determined to adapt! At this date, the PG Symphony season is still set to kick off Nov. 22.
