Much needed, new rental apartments coming
The Canopy at Babcock Ranch will start construction on 373 new rental units in February. Located near Founder’s Square, the site plan review has been with Charlotte County since last July. 10 apartment buildings, a club house and a pool will sit alongside the new Lake Bullhorn.
Allegiant news well read in Punta Gorda
According to the SUN, any news about Allegiant is widely read and shared. Whether it is about flights canceled due to COVID, new routes or news about Sunseeker, it is popular news with area residents.
Charlotte posts best-ever graduation rate
Superintendent of Charlotte County Schools announced that the number of graduations in 2021 was .5% higher than 2020, “the highest graduation rate recorded in our district’s history.” Commending all, the goal of the district is to strive toward even higher rates.
Charlotte County Schools Strategic Improvement
Our most recent ranking for last school year was 13 for which we received a B grade. The plan shows the school board and staff’s intentional actions to work toward becoming an A District within the next 2 years. Read Here
Budweiser Clydesdales visit Punta Gorda
Thousands of people came to PG on Thursday, Dec 16 to see the world famous 8-horse team, signature beer wagon, and the adorable Dalmatian parade around downtown. The multitude of smiling faces of all ages along the route gave proof to the joy they brought to our city. Thank you to Suncoast Beverage Sales for allowing us to work with you on getting them here at such short notice and for pulling off a great event for our entire community.
Sun Country flies here
Sun Country Airlines brings the north central US and beyond to Punta Gorda. Started Oct 8, passengers fly in and out of PGD on Mondays & Fridays to Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport (MSP.) Travelers from this area can connect to almost anywhere from MSP.
Tourism in the area up, up, up!
Advertising by the Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach Visitor and Convention bureau is working; tourism director Sean Doherty is happy. Charlotte County bed tax numbers show that tourism was at the $3.7 million level in 2015-2016. October 1, 2019 to Sept 30, 2020 – that number rose to $4.5 million. 2020-2021 showed an increase to $6.1 million, a 26% (approx) rise.
Punta Gorda Air Center
Deron Webb has joined Punta Gorda Airport as its Fixed Base Operator (FBO) General Manager. He will have oversight over all commercial fueling & all operations at the new PGD Air Center, planned to open Spring 2022. Phases 1 & 2 of the 13,000 square-foot Center is under construction. It will house FBO operations, meeting & event space, a restaurant & bar, leasable office suites, pilot lounge, & aircraft parking on a 510,000-square-foot ramp.
Allegiant alliance with Mexican airline
Allegiant Airline announced it is seeking approval to form an alliance with Viva Aerobus, that they might offer economical flights to Mexico. Flights will likely not come into Punta Gorda Airport though, as it is not set up for customs or have preclearance status.
PG Airport breaks records - AGAIN!
Passenger traffic at the Punta Gorda Airport is set to break previous years’ records. With nearly a 15% increase in Nov 2021 over Nov 2019, this is the 5th consecutive month of record passenger counts. Passenger traffic for 2021 is likely to exceed 1.5 million by the end of 2021!
